World Championship Double completed

Michael Weiss successfully concludes the World Championship “Double” in Hawaii. At the XTERRA World Championships in Kapalua, Maui, the triathlon pro from Lower Austria finished 18th overall in the high-caliber professional field and there-by ranked third in the Hawaiian Double which combines the Ironman World Championship time with the Xterra finish time.

A mere two weeks after the Ironman World Championships in Kailua-Kona, the best cross-triathletes in the world battle it out on the neighboring island of Maui. As a former world-class and Olympian mountain biker, Michael Weiss, always has XTERRA Worlds highlighted on the calendar.

The now 35-year old Austrian has a place in the "XTERRA Hall of Fame” as the 2011 World Champion. “The sport of XTERRA has developed so much since my win four years ago. There are many specialists today," said Weiss, who crossed his sixth Maui finish line in 18th overall.

"The conditions were more extreme than ever this year!" The 1.5 kilometer ocean swim rocked and tossed the 800 competitors with huge waves. “It was the perfect day for surfing,” as Weiss describes the water at Fleming Beach.

The always challenging mountain bike course became a 32km brutal mud battle. Weiss was on a Diamondback Overdrive 29er outfitted for the treacherous conditions. "I had to go to my limit and in some places even beyond,” he recalls.

In a time of 3:11:19 Weiss crossed the line completely covered sweat, mud, and a bit of blood. With “only a few scratches and bruises," Weiss was satisfied with his performance. In the prestigious combination of Ironman and XTERRA World Championships the Austrian finished third behind Ben Hoffman (USA) and Sebastian Kienle (GER).
